Home and Garden by Gertrude Jekyll, 1900This 19th-century cloth binding was a very important piece in its owner's collection, but its broken hinges, fraying spine cloth, and loose pages made it unsafe to read or handle.
The book was rebacked using new unbleached linen cloth, carefully toned to blend in with the wear and light-bleaching on the spine cloth and hinges. The loose pages were reattached with water-reversible methyl cellulose, and the repaired hinges were reinforced with thin strips of Japanese tissue.
